Tobacco Cessation Centre is a WHO sponsored project commenced on 31st May 2002. It was established as a part of building up of a model for tobacco Cessation in different settings like Cancer Hospital, Psychiatry Institutes allover India. The project has got two components namely clinical and community approaches for intervening in tobacco cessation. It is achieved through providing counselling and pharmaco therapy for the tobacco users who approach the clinic for de-addiction of tobacco habit. These subjects are followed up for one year for helping them to maintain the behavioural changes for reducing or quitting the tobacco consumption.
Subjects are motivated to get relevant health information, to learn alternative strategies, necessary medication for dealing with related health problems like aphthous ulcers, dyspepsia etc. A major preventive step is to identify pre cancerous lesions and motivate the subject stick to abstinence from tobacco use.
In community intervention TCC tries to educate general and specified population on ill-effects of tobacco through Information, Education and Communication Programmes in Educationl Institutions like schools, Colleges, Police Academy, Health Institutions like Naturopathy Centres etc. Other major modes of intervention are participating in Cancer Detection Camps, Blood Donation camps and other Health Camps and fairs. TCC uses audio visual aids like pamphlets, booklets, posters, and video movies, slide presentation for reaching out the different strata of community. Angan Wadi Workers are trained to extend the service to slum communities.
